Vision

Safetown will be a large scale experiential learning facility, incorporating state of the art technology. It will be designed in a manner to nurture the values and skills of safety, health and citizenship in children, young people and families from across the city.

On this scale, Safetown will be the first of its kind in Scotland. It will be established as a 'Centre of Excellence and Best Practice' for preventative measures in dealing with accidents, poor health, criminal and anti - social behaviour. In conjunction with mainstream learning activities it will act as a focus and flagship for the vision of a better, stronger and inclusive Scotland.

Experiential Learning

Interactive or experiential learning approaches can help children and young people build knowledge and encourage more holistic solutions to hazardous situations. Use of multiple senses such as sight and sound increases the retention of what is learned.

The Child Safety Centre has been successful in delivering experiential safety education since 1998. The Centre is small scale and limited in the quantity and quality of experiences it can deliver, however, experiences gained from the Centre can be carried forward and help underpin the appropriate application of technology and experience deign for Safetown.

Safetown is a natural evolution. By creating a centre that uses technology most effectively in a variety of formats and at a scale that can comfortably accommodate the increasing number of potential participants, we can positively influence future generations. Safetown will radically extend the frontiers of interactive learning.

The Journey

Visits to Safetown will take the form of a Journey. This Journey will take participants through a series of multi - sensory and multi - media Zones designed to involve and engage understanding. Participants will be able to place themselves in a variety of carefully constructed scenarios that would be impossible to experience in the real world without potential consequences of injury.

The five proposed areas are the Learning Zone, the City Zone, the Citizenship Zone, a Demonstration Zone and an Adventure Play Zone. Each of these areas will be unique and will offer varied and different experiences from one area to the next. Learning outcomes, knowledge and understanding will be aligned to the 5 - 14 curriculum including Education for Citizenship and will include:

  • Drug, Alcohol & Tobacco education
  • Fire Safety
  • Vandalism & Graffiti
  • Home Safety
  • Road Safety
  • Law and Order
  • Health and Well Being, Healthy Lifestyles
  • Community Participation
  • Managing Conflict
  • World of Work
  • First Aid

The Safetown Experience can be tailored to suit the needs of participants ranging from issued based sessions to full day visits.

As Safetown gains national recognition there will be further opportunities to develop the Safetown Experience.
